I was SO happy to have a finished basement in this house. It even came with a new gas fireplace. Although the room was spacious, it still needed a little sprucing up and I also quickly realized we needed more storage for Thomas' toys.
Here are the photos from when we first moved in:
I had this vision of beautiful built-ins at the back of the room with shelving on both sides of the TV to display photos, books, etc. I relayed my vision to my husband and although he wasn't thrilled with the project I had added to our weekend activities, he came up with some great ideas to help complete my built in plans.
First we went to home depot and picked up 4 white stock cabinets and attached them to the wall. We also picked out hardware from Home Depot to install on the doors and drawers. We wanted to give the built in's a rustic look so we bought wood, stained it a dark brown & screwed it to the cabinets.
I wanted to keep the rustic look going so I went to Bud's Warehouse in search of reclaimed wood. I did not have success finding reclaimed wood but I did find some free pallets and was pretty pleased with myself for bringing home wood that was free!
TIP: DO NOT BRING HOME A PALLOT AND ASK YOUR HUSBAND TO BREAK IT APART DURING A MAJOR FOOTBALL GAME. THOSE PALLETS ARE STRONG AND YOUR HUBBY WILL NOT BE HAPPY WITH YOU.
Chris built the shelves on both sides of the TV, cut the the pallets to the appropriate size and nailed them to the wall. I have learned now that if we want to use pallets, we should probably avoid trying to pry it apart and just use a saw; trying to pull those apart is no joke. We finished the built ins and still had the yellow on the walls. The new addition looked so pretty, I had to get a fresh coat of paint on the walls ASAP.
The room was really coming together and I absolutely loved that we could put all of Thomas' toys out of site in the cabinets. I wanted to continue the play space by painting the small closet door with chalk paint and adding a craft table from IKEA in the corner.
Here was the end result:
We had some really great times in this basement and I miss that gas fireplace! Here is a cute video of Thomas jamming out to Frozen in his new playroom.
