Updating a Kitchen on a Limited Budget

When I first saw this kitchen I was amazed by the size! It had recently been updated, but unfortunately it was not updated to my taste.  We already had a long list of renovations for this house so I had a very limited budget for any updates in this kitchen.

Here were the immediate features that I preferred to change:

  • Lighting

  • Flooring - I wanted darker and less "fake" looking

  • Lift Up Cabinets - I did not love these cabinets and wanted to change those so they were all uniform with the shaker style

  • Lower Cabinets - Didn't love the orangish color

  • Cabinet Pulls

  • Backsplash

  • Purple accent wall!!!

Our friends came to visit shortly after we moved in and I was encouraged by aspects of the kitchen they they didn't mind and even seemed to like.  Many of our friends liked the upper "lift up" cabinets & also didn't mind the backsplash at all.  With this feedback we decided to keep the cabinets as is and also decided to keep the backsplash.

When we decided to refinish the floors on the main floor we had to take out the cabinets for proper installation.  We discovered that the cabinets were from ikea and were able to purchase gray base cabinets with almost the exact same layout.  The orangish base cabinets would have clashed too much with the dark wood floors.  We also purchased new handles for all of the cabinets that gave it a more "farmhouse" feel. The old cabinets were in great shape and we were able to resell them on Craigslist for $500. SCORE!

Our beautiful floors!

Our cabinets were being delivered to our house and Chris asked me to check the inventory to make sure we weren't missing any pieces.  I sent him the photo below and told him it looked like it it was all there! Ha!  This was a little overwhelming but we printed out our full order and sorted all of the pieces by cabinet and it went rather quickly.

When my water broke with my baby girl, only the kitchen floor was installed.  Chris worked like crazy while I was in the hospital trying to get the cabinets in, but there was still some installation to finish when we came home from the hospital.

Here is the kitchen today. With the new base cabinets we were able to add a farmhouse sink, a drawer for the trash/recycling and two corner lazy susans! The last piece of this renovation is to update the lighting.  I'm not digging the stained glass flourescent lighting currently in the space.

Here is the pendant that I bought to go over the sink that still needs to be installed.  Fun fact, this is the same pendant in Randall's kitchen from the show This Is Us.

I love the dark wood with the gray cabinets, it really brings a more youthful feel to the kitchen.

With the purple wall gone, the kitchen is much more peaceful.

The kitchen table was another DIY project. I sanded the top (it was a yellow glossy wood), smacked it with chains and smashed nails on the top to get a weathered look and then stained it a darker color. We then painted the base of the table and chairs black.

Here is one of my favorite pieces, my china cabinet from Arhaus.
