Boy’s Bedroom Makeover | Spring ORC Week 1

Sharing is caring!

Last Updated on January 12, 2021 by lindseymahoney

The Better Homes & Gardens Spring One Room Challenge is here and I am so excited to participate again! Over the next 8 weeks, I will be transforming my boy’s bedroom into a modern and functional space for a growing dude. If you are unfamiliar with the One Room Challenge, it is a bi-annual event where featured designers and guest participants transform a space in their home! Due to the unusual circumstances with COVID-19, participants will have 8 weeks instead of 6 to complete their space. Participants share the entire process of the room transformation through weekly blog posts and updates on social media accounts.

I participated in my first One Room Challenge last fall and it was a blast! I renovated our dining room and enjoyed every step of the process. There were over 300 participants who transformed a room and it was a fun opportunity to cheer others on and be inspired by all of the amazing projects going on across the country.

For this challenge, I will be transforming my 7-year-old boy’s bedroom. We moved into our new home last fall and I have been promising him a bedroom makeover to reflect his personality and style. Every Wednesday I will be publishing a blog post on my weekly progress and I will be sharing all of the daily behind the scenes fun over on Instagram.

Boy’s Bedroom Design Plans

Since moving into our home last fall, I have pretty much let my son decorate his bedroom however he wanted. I knew we would be updating it in the near future and the Spring ORC was the perfect opportunity to get this project started! My goal for this bedroom makeover is to make it super functional and create a space that reflects his personality while also allowing him to grow into it.

Here is what I hope to add to this space:

  • Bunk Bed: My son is DYING for his very own bunk bed
  • Desk: For schoolwork and drawing
  • Clothing Storage: Thomas needs a larger dresser for his clothes – he has been using a small, temporary dresser borrowed from my in-laws
  • Book storage: This room will be getting lots of shelving to store all of his books!
  • Display shelves: More shelves to display legos
  • Air flow: I am hoping to install a ceiling fan and order some window screens so we can get airflow in this bedroom!

Bunk Bed/Office Area

This is the current view from my son’s bedroom door. Isn’t it welcoming?! LOL.

Boys bedroom makeover - One Room Challenge Week 1

I have a grand plan to build a loft bunk bed over the full-size bed with a floating desk to the left of the bed. The biggest hurdle right now is hiring someone to complete the project. I had a carpenter lined up but he may not be able to do it now with all of the challenges surrounding the stay at home orders. If I can’t hire this out I will look into building it with my husband or buying a loft bed that we can assemble ourselves. This part of the project can either be the most exciting part of the renovation or the biggest bummer if it doesn’t work out. Stay tuned for all of the juicy details!!

Bedroom Book Nook/Activity Area

Thomas has TONS of books and legos that need a place to be put away. I will be installing built-in bookshelves to the left of the windows and a reading nook to the right of the windows. I also plan on installing a large mural of the mountains on the wall to the right. New window treatments will complete the look of the nook.

The bookshelves will be on the right side of the wall and a larger dresser will go on the left side of the wall.

Boy’s Bedroom Mood Board

For this bedroom makeover, I plan on using neutral colors and earth tones. While it will have a neutral base for the design, I promise it will not be boring! By bringing the outdoors in, I want my son to feel a sense of freedom (one of the 10 aesthetics of joy) that will spark his creativity and bring him happiness. Thomas loves the outdoors and has a special place in his heart for the mountains since moving from Colorado a few years ago. I am keeping the wall color a warm white so that we can change up other design elements as he grows older and his tastes change.

Iโ€™m doing my sons room too! Opting for a woodsy mural... if all goes well. Itโ€™s my very first ORC. I canโ€™t wait to see how yours turns out. Best of luck on the mural! Itโ€™s going to be beautiful!
