Chris and I really flexed our DIY muscles when we created this built-in TV console and storage cabinets in our basement! When we first toured this house, I SO happy to have a finished basement. And it got bonus points for having a gas fireplace.
We were pumped to turn this basement into TV room of sorts and a place for our toddler to keep his toys and play.
I knew I wanted to change the color of the walls and I quickly realized that the basement was lacking storage. We wanted a spot for Thomas to put all of his toys at the end of the day.
I had a vision of a large built-in unit at the back of the room with cabinets on the bottom and open shelving on top. I relayed my vision to my husband and he was thrilled to add another project to our weekend activities (sarcasm!).
Lower Cabinet Installation
First, we went to Home Depot and picked up 4 white stock cabinets and attached them to the wall. We also picked out hardware from Home Depot to install on the doors and drawers. We wanted to give the built in’s a rustic look so we bought plywood, stained it a dark brown & screwed it to the cabinets.
Built-In Shelving Installation
We wanted to keep the rustic look going so I went to Bud’s Warehouse in search of reclaimed wood. I did not have success finding reclaimed wood but I did find some free pallets! I was pretty pleased with myself for bringing home wood that was free!
TIP: Do not bring home a pallet and ask your husband to break it apart during a football game. He will not be pleased!
Chris built the shelves on both sides of the TV,. He cut the the pallets to the appropriate size and nailed them to the wall. I have learned now that if we want to use pallets, you have to use a saw, prying them apart is nearly impossible. We finished the built ins and still had the yellow on the walls. The new addition looked so pretty, I had to get a fresh coat of paint on the walls ASAP.
Basement Built-in TV Unit & Storage Cabinets After
This storage wall came out even better than I had imagined! We used chalkboard paint on the closet door and added a craft table from IKEA in the corner. This really pulled the room together! Thomas loved to hang out in this fun play room/ TV room.
We had some really great times in this basement and I miss that gas fireplace! I know the new homeowners will appreciate the added functionality that the built in unit now provides.
