Materials Needed for Homemade Wrapping Paper
- Brown craft paper (or butcher paper)
- Acrylic paint to mix with water – I used white paint
- Paintbrush
1 | Prepare Your Workspace
Find a clean and well-lit area where you can comfortably work on your DIY wrapping paper. Lay down some newspaper or a protective covering to prevent any paint from staining your work surface.
Because I was making this paper in December, I set up my workspace in our basement.
2 | Cut the brown paper
Measure and cut the brown paper to the desired dimensions for your gifts. Ensure that you have enough paper to wrap each gift properly and allow for some overlap.
You can easily find brown paper rolls or sheets at your local craft store or online. Make sure to choose a size that suits your needs. If you prefer a more rustic look, you can also repurpose brown paper bags.
3 | Mix the Acrylic Paint with Water
Acrylic paint is the ideal choice for this project as it adheres well to the brown paper and provides vibrant colors. Because I created this DIY gift wrap for the holiday season, I chose a simple white paint to mimic snow.
In a paper bowl, mix acrylic paint with a little bit of water to thin the paint. This allows you to splatter the paint more easily with a thinner consistency.
4 | Splatter the Paint Onto the Paper
Dip a paintbrush in the watered down paint and lightly flick the paint at the plain wrapping paper. Continue flicking the paint on the wrapping paper until you have your desired look.
This fun craft can also be applied to DIY gift bags using paint and brown bags.
5 | Wrap Your Gift
Once the wrapping paper is dry, it’s time to wrap your gifts! Cut a piece of your DIY wrapping paper to fit each gift, ensuring you have enough to fully cover the item. Use tape or secure the wrapping paper in place.
To add a personal touch to your wrapped gifts, consider adding festive embellishments. You can attach tree trimmings, ribbon bows, or handwritten gift tags to make the presentation even more unique. Place the holiday gift under the Christmas tree and enjoy!
Now that you’ve seen how easy it is to make your own wrapping paper with kraft paper and paint, you can get creative with your designs for any occasion.
This super simple DIY project lets you add a personal touch to your gifts without breaking the bank. Plus, each piece is a one-of-a-kind creation that will make your presents stand out. I hope you found this step-by-step tutorial helpful and it has inspired you to DIY wrapping paper of your own!
Happy crafting, and enjoy wrapping gifts with your handmade paper!
