Porch Before
Our small front porch had seen better days, and I was excited to spruce it up with some quick and easy DIY projects. I painted the front door a dark gray paint color a few years ago, but realize now it is a little too dark for my taste.

1 | Clean the Porch
Before diving into the fun stuff, give your porch a good cleaning. Sweep away dirt and cobwebs, power wash the concrete porch floor, and wipe down any furniture or railings.
Don’t forget to clean your windows and outdoor light fixtures. With a rag and bucket of soapy water, remove dirt and grime from the front door and porch trim.
These small touches can make a huge difference in making your porch look fresh and inviting. The porch is now a clean slate and ready for paint and seasonal decor!
2 | Paint the Front Door
One of the easiest ways to update your front porch is by painting your front door. It’s a simple project that can completely change the look of your home’s exterior.
I ran to our local Lowe’s and grabbed a can of exterior paint for the front door. For the color, I chose Escape Gray by Sherwin Williams HGTV Home paint line.

This green-gray shade is a nice pop of color when paired with white trim. It also looks great with the brown stone exterior on the porch. Whatever paint color you choose, make sure it compliments your home’s overall color scheme.
3 | Fill Planters will Fall Plants
While at Lowes, I also found tall black planters that were perfect to place on each side of the front door. The square shape of the planters gives a modern look while still complimenting the traditional style of our home. With a height of 26″, the square planters were the perfect size to create a balanced look on the front porch.
For a fall porch makeover, consider filling the planters with warm colors like mustard, burgundy, and dark purples. Mums are a fall staple, and they look fantastic on a front porch. For a more layered look, mix in other fall plants like ornamental kale, pansies, or asters.
4 | Hang A Festive Wreath
A fall wreath is a must-have for your front door. You can go traditional with one made of dried leaves and berries, or try something unique like a wreath made of mini pumpkins or one that features a mix of fall flowers and greenery.
5 | Add Outdoor Fall Decor
Now for the fun part—seasonal decor! When it comes to outdoor fall decor, Lowes is my favorite place to shop! Fall is all about warmth, coziness, and bringing the outdoors in.
Here are some ideas to get your porch ready for the season:
New Doormat: Create that new front porch look with a doormat to welcome guests. For a layered look, consider adding an outdoor rug underneath, especially if your doormat is smaller. The green and white pattern pairs perfectly with the new paint on the front door and seasonal colors.
Pumpkins and Gourds: Nothing says fall quite like pumpkins. Arrange a mix of pumpkins and gourds in various sizes and colors on your porch steps or next to your door. You can go for the classic orange pumpkins, or mix it up with white, green, and even painted pumpkins for a more modern look. I grabbed the pumpkins on our front porch from our flower beds where they have been growing!
Lanterns and Candles: Add some ambiance with lanterns or candles. Place a couple of lanterns on either side of your door or on a small table, and fill them with battery-operated candles for a warm, inviting glow in the evening.
American Flag: Regardless of the season, an American flag proudly displayed on the front porch is always in style!
More Ideas for Decorative Elements for Your Porch This Fall:
- Seating Area: When spacing allows, it is always a great idea to add seating with a charming rocking chair, porch swing, or wooden bench.
- Cozy Textiles: Drape a cozy plaid throw over the back of a chair or add a few throw pillows in fall colors like burnt orange, deep red, or mustard yellow.
- Outdoor Lighting: If your porch doesn’t have built-in lighting, consider adding some string lights or hanging a decorative lantern. You can also place solar-powered lights along the walkway leading up to your porch for an extra touch of warmth.
Small Front Porch Makeover | REVEAL
The fall porch makeover is complete and I am thrilled with how it turned out! This makeover is the perfect example that small changes make a big impact.
The new planters from Lowe’s are my favorite addition to our front porch. I am already imagining how I will decorate and fill these planters for the Christmas season.
I am so proud of our welcoming front porch and can’t wait to host friends and family this Fall.
Updating a small front porch doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. With a little creativity and some seasonal decor, you can transform your little porch into a warm, welcoming space that boosts your home’s curb appeal instantly.
This fall, embrace the season and make your porch a place where you and your guests will love to linger. After all, there’s nothing better than coming home to a porch that feels like a cozy escape from the world.
