This Valentine’s Day my daughter asked if we could DIY the Valentines for her classroom. We decided to create a paint sample bookmark Valentine for her friends! This quick and easy DIY requires a few budget-friendly materials and can be completed within a day.
When DIYing a gift, I always want it to have a purpose and I love that these Valentines can be used as a bookmark.
Let’s start this kid-friendly DIY!

1 | Choose Your Paint Samples
Surprisingly, Sherwin William’s no longer offers paint sample strips with multiple color options. We ran to Lowe’s and found paint sample strips with 3 color variations, but the samples were wider than a standard bookmark.
We decided to cut the paint samples in half once we got home to achieve the size that we wanted.
Evelyn wanted red and pink bookmarks for the girls and blue and green bookmarks for the boys. We grabbed 10 “girls colors” and 10 “boys colors” knowing that we would double the amount once they were cut in half.
The best part is that the paint samples are free!
2 | Cut the Paint Samples in Half
To get a narrower bookmark with the paint sample strips, we cut them in half using a paper cutter. If you don’t have a paper cutter, you can use a ruler to mark a line and cut it in half using scissors.
3 | Make a Hole Punch at the Top of the Bookmark
Using a 1/4 inch hole punch, make a hole at the top of the bookmark to add a decorative ribbon.
4 | Add Heart Cutouts to the Bookmark
Using the heart-shaped hole punch, make. a cutout on each paint sample color.
BONUS: The heart-shaped cutouts can be used for other Valentine’s Day crafts, too! My daughter used the heart cut-outs to decorate her Valentine’s Day box for school.
5 | Attach the Decorative Ribbon
We continued with the Valentine’s Day theme and purchased a roll of thin, pink ribbon.
To attach the ribbon to the bookmark you will fold it in half and loop it through the hole punch at the top. Cut the ribbon to your desired length and add to each bookmark.

How cute are these simple Valentine-themed bookmarks? We are going to pair each bookmark with Trolli gummy worms to keep with the “bookworm” theme.
I hope this sweet little craft has given you a little inspiration today!
